Merrisa feels that her dharma (true calling) is to be a leader and teacher to others. She lives her life by the motto “shine more light, share more love” and is passionate about helping others embrace this concept within their own lives. She feels that this world is sweetest when you walk through it feeling confident, happy, healthy, and inspired. Her classes incorporate a sense of humor, mindful alignment, freedom to flow, and deep awareness of the breath. She encourages students to find joy on their mat with a playful dance between effort and ease — inspiring you to work hard while still giving you space to listen to your unique body.

She completed her first 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in 2014 at the Yoga Centre in San Luis Obispo with Megan Whitney. She then went on to manage several YogaWorks studios in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she earned another 200 hours of training with Nikki Estrada and Hillary Skibell. In 2018 Merrisa completed an advanced 300-hour teacher training under the guidance of Michele Klink. She currently holds a certificate as an RYT-500 and leads regular classes in Petaluma, CA.

When she isn’t teaching yoga, you can find Merrisa working out in the gym, hiking, camping, cooking, or visiting one of the many amazing wineries in Sonoma County. She currently holds a role as the VP of Operations & Sales for International Yoga and is excited to get out from behind the scenes to guide you through this adventure!

FAQ

What inspired you to teach yoga?

In college, I had a roommate who was obsessed with yoga. He literally went 2 times a day, 6 times a week and was in incredible shape. One evening he invited me to join him for a class and from that moment, I was hooked! Having done gymnastics as a kid I loved the acrobatic side of yoga and enjoyed doing handstands and backbends. After a year of practicing consistently I decided I wanted to take things deeper and enrolled in my first teacher training. My relationship with yoga has changed greatly since those early years, and while I still appreciate the physical asana as a way to build strength and flexibility, I have fallen in love with the spiritual and emotional aspects of the practice even more and love guiding others on this journey.

Who are your most influential teachers?

My first teacher trainers, Megan Whitney, Hillary Skibell, Nikki Estrada and Michele Klink, along with my dear yogi friends Brittany Lamb, Fiona O'Neill, Peter Bartesh and William Arrison.

How would you describe your classes?

Joyful and revitalizing. My classes are challenging but I strongly believe that the practice should nourish you, not deplete you. In my classes you are always welcome to modify or amplify your practice to find a flow that works best for you!

Why do you feel retreats are transformational?

Retreats allow us to step out of our comfort zone as we experience new sights, sounds, and cultures! This allows us to shift our perspective and find new ways of thinking and being. Plus, it's pretty fun to make new friends along the way!

What is your favorite pose to teach?

Playful poses like arm balances, backbends, and inversions! I really enjoy helping others find ways to access these mystical poses that may not have previously been accessible to them.

What is your favorite pose to practice?

Ardha Chandrasana, Half Moon Pose!

Where are your favorite places to travel?

Destinations that are tropical and warm like Bali & Mexico, as well as places that offer big adventures and epic hiking - such as Peru & Iceland!
