Weaving Yoga & Culture in Guatemala

Weaving Yoga & Culture in Guatemala

Lake Atitlán is believed by the Mayans to be the center of the universe. Alexander von Humboldt called it "the most beautiful lake in the world." Surrounded by a dozen highly preserved Mayan villages and 3 dormant volcanoes, Atitlán is the perfect setting to weave together our yoga and cultural adventure.

Weaving is a huge part of Guatemalan history and vivid colorful patterns have been handed down for generations. The culture itself weaves together Mayan mysticism and Spanish influence in a unique fusion. We'll explore nearby villages, support local artisans, marvel at the colors, textures and traditions, hike a volcano, enjoy a cacao ceremony, take in the smells, sounds and tastes, and basque in majestic sunrises and sunsets reflected in the tranquil waters of our captivating lake. By signing up for this retreat, you will be donating to the Mayan Mother's Food Fund. We believe positive social impact in action is yoga.

And of course we'll weave in twice daily yoga asana practices with Andrea's signature sequencing and theming that bring your journey onto your mat and use your mat to fully embody your journey.

You'll have plenty of free time to enjoy walks along the lake, sweat in the wood-fired sauna, soak in the solar-powered hot tub, drop into solitude, dive into a book (or the lake), and connect with new friends.

Woven together, your Lake Atitlan, Guatemalan yoga and culture adventure is Mayan magic you don't want to miss.

Mayan Mother's Fund, Guatemala
IY Travel Impact

In partnership with the Mayan Mother's Fund, 100% of our donation will go toward buying food for local Mayan women in Santa Cruz La Laguna whose families are in the greatest need of financial support. 21 years after the end of a civil war that took the lives of 200,000, and estimated 95 % lost by the indigenous peoples in Guatemala, little has been done to bring justice or economic opportunity to the indigenous Maya. Most of the eight million indigenous Maya people who live in Guatemala suffer from poverty. Poverty affects indigenous Maya women the most. One in three indigenous Maya women has no access to health or reproductive services. More than 70% of their children are malnourished.

How Safe is it to Travel to Guatemala?

A note from the owner of the retreat center where we will be staying:

Our retreat center is located in a remote, rural and incredibly beautiful area near the pueblo of Santa Cruz La Laguna, Guatemala, with a population of about 4,000. The only access to our retreat center is by boat which ensures that our landscape is quiet and pristinely preserved. I am one of 100 foreigners living in this village, and we all come and go to our destinations without disturbances. Our village and the outlying area have virtually no crime at all.

Since 2004, we've ushered hundreds of groups to and from our little oasis without incident. We have individuals and groups picked up in private shuttles with experienced drivers to eliminate any chance of problems in the city. We have long-term, time tested relationships with two fabulous shuttle companies who stay in touch with us throughout the duration of each trip. We know our drivers personally and have been on many trips with them ourselves.

I am cautious when I travel to Guatemala City, as I am when I travel in any big city. The Aurora International airport in Guatemala is clean, safe and efficiently managed. We've had many people shuttling from Guatemala City to our retreat center year after year, and so far it's all been smooth. We do our best to make the journey to our center smooth and pleasant. We've created a safe, effective transport system that will enable you to land in this powerfully beautiful and spiritually inspiring piece of paradise!  We sure hope you'll choose to join us for an unforgettable week of adventure and insight.

What if I'm traveling alone?

We get hundreds of travelers each year who go on retreat alone. If you are traveling without a friend or partner, but prefer to share your room, we will do our best to match you with another traveler of the same gender. If for some reason, we are not able to match you with a roommate, a single supplement fee will be applied to your balance and you will be sent an updated invoice approximately one month prior to departure.

How many people are expected on this retreat?

Attendance varies from trip to trip, but for this trip we anticipate bringing 18 to 22 people.

Do I need a visa to visit Guatemala?

No, US citizens are not required to get a visa to visit Guatemala. You will be given a Visa upon arrival valid for 90 days.

IMPORTANT: Your passport must be valid 6 months beyond your date of arrival in Guatemala.

Do I need travel insurance?

International Yoga strictly adheres to the cancellation policy outlined in our Terms & Conditions and does not make exceptions under any circumstances. For this reason we strongly recommended the purchase of travel insurance. In order to guarantee maximum coverage, most travel insurance providers require that you obtain a policy within 7-10 days of placing your initial deposit. There are a broad variety of policies and providers for you to choose from. Be sure to understand the fine print of the policy you select to ensure you know exactly what is and isn't covered especially if you are concerned you may need to cancel for COVID-19 / pandemic-related reasons (which most carriers would cover only under a "Cancel for Any Reason" tier of coverage). Although International Yoga cannot advise on specific policies or providers, you may find this guide helpful.

What is the cancellation policy for this trip?

A $500 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your spot on the trip. The final balance payment is due January 26, 20232. If you cancel prior to the final balance deadline we will refund any payments you have made, minus the non-refundable deposit. We will send you an invoice to complete your payment in advance of the final balance deadline. If you do not complete the payment on your own by that date, the card on file will be automatically charged your remaining balance. If you register for the trip after January 26, 2023, the full amount is due at sign up.  All payments are non-refundable and non-transferable after January 26, 2023. International Yoga must strictly adhere to its cancellation policy to offset costs incurred prior to the commencement of retreat. Click here to view the Terms and Conditions to which you agree to upon registration.
