Journey to the Heart: A Bhakti Vinyasa Retreat on Lake Atitlán

Are you ready to take a voyage to one of the most mystical and magical places on Earth? Lake Atitlán is believed by the Mayans to be the center of the universe.  Alexander von Humboldt called it "the most beautiful lake in the world." Surrounded by a dozen highly preserved Mayan villages and 3 dormant volcanoes, Atitlán is the perfect setting to ignite the fires of transformation and ground into a profound state of calm.

We'll share magical morning meditations as tranquil and reflective as the lake itself.  We'll practice dynamic and devotional Bhakti vinyasa yoga, rooted in alignment, technique, grit, and gratitude.  We'll sing, chant, sweat, flow, laugh like children, sleep like babies, and maybe shed a tear.  We'll humbly explore the culture of local villages with guided excursions, support verified fair trade organizations for local artists, and take in a few majestic hikes to witness a sunrise and sunset like never before.  You'll have plenty of free time to enjoy walks along the lake, sweat in the wood-fired sauna, soak in the solar-powered hot tub, drop into solitude, or connect with new friends.

FAQ

What airport do I fly into?

You will book your international ticket into and out of Guatemala City (airport code: GUA) to arrive the morning of February 1st and depart on the late afternoon or evening of February 8th.

Are airport transfers included in the price of my trip?

No. Airport transfers are not included in the total trip price. The retreat center does provide a shuttle service from the airport directly to the retreat facility. We will help to facilitate shuttle groups closer to the date of departure once we have received more individual flight arrival details.

Your arrival and departure boat transfer is included.

Are meals included?

Yes, all meals are included in your program. Meals are a vegetarian based eclectic blend of local and international cuisine, created from Guatemala's cornucopia of fruit and vegetables. Meals are served buffet style are abundant and freshly prepared in our kitchen daily. The breakfast buffet includes a main dish, granola, yogurt, fruit and daily specials. Luncheon buffets comprise a hearty vegetarian main course, organic greens, homemade bread and a colorful fruit platter. Dinner buffets contain soup, vegetarian entre, seasonal side dishes, organic greens and a scrumptious dessert. Two fish are also included. Baked goods are produced daily.

What are the accommodations like?

The rooms at Villa Sumaya are a combination of triple, double and single accommodations. Your room assignment will be based on your preference and will either be in Lotus House, Ginger Suites, or Skyline Bungalows.

Are gratuities included in my trip price?

No, gratuities are not included. We recommend giving a tip between $6-$8 per day to Villa Sumaya. This Dana (offering) goes to the entire staff; from the gardeners (who carry your bags), to kitchen staff and housekeeping to the local managers. Please tip body workers and tour guides separately.

What if I'm traveling alone?

We get hundreds of travelers each year who go on retreat alone. If you are traveling without a friend or partner, but prefer to share your room, we will do our best to match you with another traveler of the same gender. If for some reason, we are not able to match you with a roommate, a single supplement will apply.

How many people are expected on this retreat?

Attendance varies from trip to trip, but 15-25 attendees is a general average.

Do I need a visa to visit Guatemala?

No, US citizens are not required to get a visa to visit Guatemala. You will be given a Visa upon arrival valid for 90 days.

IMPORTANT: Your passport must be valid 6 months beyond your date of arrival in Guatemala.

Do I need vaccinations?

There are no required vaccinations for travel to Guatemala. However, there are some recommended (suggested) vaccinations given by the CDC. To see the complete list of what is recommended, please visit the CDC Website and consult with your primary care physician to make a decision on what is best for you.

Do I need travel insurance?

All payments to International Yoga are non-refundable & non-transferable. The purchase of travel insurance is strongly recommended to ensure you are covered should any unexpected event arise. A personal, political, environmental or weather-related incident or pre-existing medical condition may prevent or interrupt your travels.  These events are rare but do occur and underscore the importance of being covered by travel insurance.  Should you elect to not purchase travel insurance, you will be assuming 100% of any costs incurred for trip cancellation or trip interruption. TravelEx  and World Nomads are two reputable organizations. There is a broad spectrum of policies and options so make sure you are clear on what exactly is covered.

What is the cancellation policy for this trip?

All retreats include a $500 non-refundable / non-transferable deposit, which is required to hold your spot on the trip. If you cancel prior to December 6, 2019 we will refund your payment minus the non-refundable deposit. All payments are non-refundable & non-transferable after December 6, 2019. International Yoga must strictly adhere to its cancellation policy to offset costs incurred prior to the commencement of retreat. Click here to view the Terms and Conditions to which you agree upon registration.

How Safe is it to Travel to Guatemala?

A note from the owner of the retreat center where we will be staying:

Our retreat center is located in a remote, rural and incredibly beautiful area near the pueblo of Santa Cruz La Laguna, Guatemala, with a population of about 4,000. The only access to our retreat center is by boat which ensures that our landscape is quiet and pristinely preserved. I am one of 100 foreigners living in this village, and we all come and go to our destinations without disturbances. Our village and the outlying area have virtually no crime at all.

Since 2004, we've ushered hundreds of groups to and from our little oasis without incident. We have individuals and groups picked up in private shuttles with experienced drivers to eliminate any chance of problems in the city. We have long-term, time tested relationships with two fabulous shuttle companies who stay in touch with us throughout the duration of each trip. We know our drivers personally and have been on many trips with them ourselves.

I am cautious when I travel to Guatemala City, as I am when I travel in any big city. The Aurora International airport in Guatemala is clean, safe and efficiently managed. We've had many people shuttling from Guatemala City to our retreat center year after year, and so far it's all been smooth. We do our best to make the journey to our center smooth and pleasant. We've created a safe, effective transport system that will enable you to land in this powerfully beautiful and spiritually inspiring piece of paradise!  We sure hope you'll choose to join us for an unforgettable week of adventure and insight.
